More competitive Belarusian products via eco-labeling

MINSK, 20 March (BelTA) – Wide introduction of eco labels in Belarus will make Belarusian products more competitive on foreign markets, said Antonius Broek, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Belarus, at the roundtable session “Eco labeling in Belarus and abroad” on 20 March.

Antonius Broek said the implementation of the joint EU/UNDP project “Assistance with the development of a comprehensive structure for international cooperation in environmental protection in Belarus” is aimed at studying the most successful foreign practices in eco labeling and the creation of the necessary legal base. Manufacturers, the general public and all interested parties will be invited to widely assimilate eco labeling for Belarusian products.

The European Union has positive experience in applying eco labels for products. Eco labeling considerably reduces environmental impact, remarked Antonius Broek. Customers buying eco labeled products encourage manufacturers to reduce energy consumption, water consumption and so on, he said.

At present there is a global trend for using eco labels in manufacturing and utilizing products for the sake of encouraging lower use of natural resources and reducing the environmental impact.

The roundtable session “Eco labeling in Belarus and abroad” took place in Minsk on 20 March, with about 50 specialists from various countries attending.
