Agricultural Biotechnology and Biosafety in Belarus

In June, 2009 Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) published a report entitled “The Status of Agricultural Biotechnology and Biosafety in Belarus”.

The 33-page report gives a brief overview of the following aspects: profile of national agriculture; national agricultural policy; status of agricultural research; national biotechnology policy; status of biotechnology research and applications of biotechnology; regulatory frameworks; state of information and communication needs; areas requiring support; participation in networks and international cooperation; recommendations Particular attention was given to GMOs, concerning issues such as policy, research and regulatory frameworks.

The report was commissioned by FAO's Research and Extension Division (NRRD) and the Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (REU). It was prepared on the basis of the report of the Consultant Alexander P. Yermishin, Head of the The National Co-ordination Centre for BioSafety of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
