On 1-2 December, 2009 within the walls of Russian State Agrarian University – Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy (RSAU-MTAA) there was organized the International Workshop "Agricultural Knowledge Exchange in Russian Language". Specialists in the sphere of information technologies and library and information resources of the leading agrarian universities and agricultural information centres and libraries from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tadjikistan, and Ukraine took an active part in the workshop.
Mr. Stephen Rudgard, FAO Office (Rome) and Mr. Michal Demes, Information and Knowledge Management Officer of FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (Budapest) greeted the workshop participants.

In course of the first day of the workshop there were made the key reports covering the problems of creation of the united information and library environment, role of the linguistic media in the formation of the generic information space in the agricultural branch, strategic role of the professional associations and communities in the organization of access to the library and information resources, usage of the network infrastructures for the transfer and exchange of knowledge. Mr. Stephen Rudgard made the key presentation on the role and significance of the project “Coherence in Information for Agricultural Research for Development” (CIARD). There were also presented reports of the representatives of FAO information centres from Belarus, Russia, Armenia, Ukraine and Moldova. The second workshop day devoted to discussion of key problems in the working groups.
The purpose of the Workshop was to provide an international forum for the presentation of the work of Russian-speaking experts and their partners in agricultural education, science and practice, and to discuss developments in agricultural information and knowledge exchange. The Workshop offered a platform for discussion, analysis and review of current status and future actions in these fields. The objective was to achieve a better understanding of global and national constraints, particularly in countries marginalised from the mainstream West European communities. The Conference also aimed to encourage and enhance the development of international co-operation in the important field of knowledge dissemination. The Conference introduced the new international initiative on Coherence in Information for Agricultural Research for Development (CIARD), and promoted action to strengthen collaboration among agricultural institutions in Russian-speaking countries towards making research information more publicly accessible.
In course of the workshop there was presented the new international initiative “Coherence in Information for Agricultural Research for Development” (CIARD) aimed for the enhancement of cooperation between the agricultural institutions in Russian-speaking countries for the origination of access to scientific research information.
Worshop conslusions:
1. National agricultural institutions in Russian-speaking CIS-member countries will take part in the initiative of the further promotion of CIARD initiatives, including the manifest and the control list and will favour the accessibility of agricultural information.
2. For the main participants of the CIARD initiative in Russian Federation and CIS countries it is recommended to obey the results of the Session of the Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Yalta, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Ukraine (November 2009) with regard to affiliation of the status of the basic institution for CIS member-countries in the sphere of training of specialists and their professional improvement in the sphere of agricultural education to Russian State Agrarian University – Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy (RSAU-MTAA). The programmes should correspond to the CIARD requirements.
3. It was proposed to organize the regional Conference on agricultural knowledge (information) exchange in Russian language in Moscow (Russian Federation) in Russian State Agrarian University – Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy on 1-4 June, 2010. The Conference will promote the further development of CIARD initiative and its philosophy in agricultural institutions of CIS countries and will further the early creation of electronic knowledge databases on agriculture and adjacent branches.
